PRINTING

Design Upload Specifications

Print file specifications may vary somewhat from one product to the next, so you should review the specifications that appear when you click on "Upload My Design." However, the specifications outlined below are applicable to most of our printed products. If you have a question that’s not covered here, please feel free to contact us.

Pre-Upload Checklist
  • When creating your file, set your artboard to the finished product size. For example, an 8.5" x 11" brochure should have an 8.5" x 11" artboard.
  • Content that must appear on the finished product must fit within the "safe zone" on the design template. (At least 0.125" within the edge of the finished product.)
  • If you have design elements — backgrounds, etc. — that are supposed to go all the way to the edge of your finished product, then those elements must extend all the way through the design template's 0.125" "bleed zone," beyond the trim line, to allow for trimming to the finished product size.
  • If your product is being designed to be mailed by OnlinePrintandMail.com, please leave the appropriate space blank for the indicia.
  • If the design template is included in your design file, either delete it or "turn off" that layer so it is not visible in the pdf you upload.
  • The document must be in CMYK mode and all colors in the document must be converted to CMYK mode.
  • When exporting your print pdf, choose the "press quality" setting, with bleeds of 0.125" on all sides, and crop marks only.
  • All fonts must be outlined in the final print pdf. If you wish to have the ability to edit text on your original file later on, make sure to save a copy for your future use that does not have the fonts outlined. (Once fonts are outlined, text can't be edited.)
  • Resolution of all images — graphics, photos, etc. — must be 300dpi or better at the size they will appear in the finished product. Warning: Most images you download from the Internet are not of sufficient resolution for printing.

To ensure the greatest quality of your finished product, and to diminish the chances of file formatting issues causing problems with your print job, we strongly recommend that you only submit press-quality pdf files.

The short answer is, use CMYK. When you are designing a file to be printed, you should use the CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color mode from the beginning through the end of production. This will prevent color changes that could leave you unhappy with your finished product. The RGB color model (red, green, blue) is more typically used for on-screen applications.

If you have artwork you would like to extend all the way to the edge of your printed product, then your print file needs to include a "bleed" in which the artwork extends past the "cut line," ensuring you get that professional, right-to-the-edge look. The "excess" artwork extending past the cut line will be trimmed off in the final stages of production.

Print files submitted to OnlinePrintandMail.com should include a 0.125" bleed on all four sides, extending an eighth of an inch beyond the finished, trimmed print size. Also, to ensure that your important text or other content is safe from being trimmed, you should place all text at least 0.125" inside the cut line.

When you export your print file from your design application — Photoshop, InDesign, Quark, Illustrator, etc. — make sure you select the "marks" option for "crop marks only" and set the bleed at 0.125" on all four sides.

Yes, you can include a border on your job — however, it's important to remember that if a border is too close to the edge of your finished product, it may cause problems with centering when your printed product is trimmed. It's best to keep any borders or frames at least 0.125" away from the cut line, and recognize that it any normal variance in trimming occurs, the border may appear slightly off center.

You should only submit press-ready pdf files that adhere to our print file guidelines. If you submit additional files, or submit a file in another format, it may delay production, or you could end up having the wrong file printed. You should only submit the file you want to have printed.

Artwork should be saved at 300dpi (dots per inch). For full-bleed artwork with image or color extending to the edge of the piece, bleed must extend past the cut-line and will be trimmed during the final cutting phase of production. Keep all text at least 0.0125” inside the cut-line.

Transparency problems can occur when you have a graphic that is supposed to have a transparent background, but instead blocks out elements that are placed in layers behind it. To avoid transparency problems, refrain from using shadows, glows or any other transparency on top of a spot color. Always convert spot colors to CMYK and flatten before submitting your file.

Rich black is a black made with a mixture of 100 percent black (K) mixed with additional cyan, magenta and yellow (CMY). It produces a deeper, darker black in print than can be achieved with just 100 percent black. We do not recommend you use rich black for smaller objects, such as body type, as this can cause problems with color registration and create "fuzzy" type or objects. If you are using rich black on larger items, we recommend the following mix for rich black:

60 Cyan
40 Magenta
40 Yellow
100 Black
